Study of a Woman [Gouache + Acrylic, ©2012]
I tried a new experiment with doing a base layer in acrylic and then using gouache to refine certain areas. It was a roller-coaster, there were times I was ready to give up on it because it wasn’t looking right, and then came up moments when it started looking better. In the end, I’m not too thrilled about it but it is only a study. I had to get the urge to paint, out of me.

I’m still not comfortable with gouache but it’s a start. I feel like all mid-century advertisements could not have been done in primarily oils. Even movie posters. But practice, practice, practice. What a difference flash makes on a piece of artwork, the second picture on the right gives you an idea of how it really looks. I love doing small studies such as this on my 4x6 watercolor block.

Postpartum Depression [gouache+digital, Painter 12, ©2011]

Heyy, so remember that new editorial assignment? Here it is in completion! What is it with all artists that they never seem to be satisfied with their own work?! I feel that way. I worked really hard on this piece but I always feel that there’s room for improvement.

I ended up using gouache in the beginning stage as a color fill in. And since I knew I wasn’t all that great with gouache and didn’t like the overall look, I then decided to digitally alter it a bit and complete the rest of the painting in Painter.
