Dejah Thoris: Princess of Mars [Colored Pencil + Digital ©2012]
In honor of the recent film adaptation of the John Carter of Mars books, my professor decided to give us the assignment of rendering Dejah Thoris using colored pencil. The whole process was invigorating! The goal was to achieve a pulp fiction cover style using like color palettes and “garish tones”. We had to utilize elements from the books such as the city of Helium, the martian landscape, two moons, and of course Dejah herself in context. The finished product was to incorporate text as if the piece was going to be published as the cover. My professor was completely in love with my design and I received great compliments from other spectators as well!
But I hope my professor, Bill, knows that this assignment technically counts as fan art!
It’s amazing how given enough time and motivation, going back on a piece and reworking it can vastly improve it! I was invited to enter my second run in the Phillustration 2012 exhibition. If you can remember, my self-portrait was picked to go up in the student section :) Anyway, I spruced this piece up for it to have a higher chance of getting in. I hope this piece along with my 3 thesis work get into the show this year!

The best thing about the second half of junior year is getting to work on a “mini” thesis to prepare you for senior year. I’ve mentioned my idea briefly before when I was thinking about a concept I wanted to try. Over winter break I had the idea of illustrating a narrative of a young woman in the mid 1960s who wants to race in the Grand Prix but has to disguise herself as a man in order to pursue it. How do you take this concept and stretch it into 3 pieces that all tie in together? It wasn’t until early on in the year when I became inspired by old movie posters, stuff from the 30’s up until the early 70’s when posters were eye-catching illustrations of your favorite legendary actors and actresses. So I thought, hey, why not make my narrative into a live-action flick? And from the many inspirations I kept on file, came these preliminary sketches. I wanted to make sure I captured the essence of photo-montage and narrating at the same time without giving too much away or too little. Nothing is set in stone, I may or may not rework the ideas a little more.

Completed Stage! However, with the very limited amount of time to work meticulously and deadline creeping in, I will save the very end for further refinement.
Prom? [acrylics ©2012]
*I was asked by my brother to paint something for his girlfriend when he asks her to prom. Of course I was paid! It was nice to bring out the paints and brushes and not have to stare at a screen for several hours. One day, I hope to afford a nice studio in my home so I can take better pictures of my work with a decent camera. This picture just doesn’t do justice to the beautiful sky I painted, such a shame! As always, traditional pieces of mine look 100x better in person.

Keeping Busy!
Professional work coming in while a student is always great news. I’m happy to announce that I get to do another cover for writer/photographer, Bill Lowenburg, for his work The Zorki Chronicles. Check out his stuff:

I’m also working on a book cover for up and coming author Shaun Mullen, which I hope runs successfully. The last commission to announce is a large portrait painting for resident, Jim Riddle. The expected time frame for that will be during the summer while I am completing my internship.
Exciting stuff!
